Taking creatine before a workout may beat after, a small trial suggests

When you take creatine may matter, not just whether you take it. A small randomized crossover trial in Nutrients tested whether the timing of a single creatine dose, before, during, or after a workout, changes acute strength performance, and found a hint that taking it beforehand came out ahead.

Why timing is an open question. Creatine is one of the best-studied and most effective supplements for building strength, but most of that evidence concerns taking it consistently over weeks, not the timing of any single dose. Whether swallowing a dose right before lifting does more for that session than taking it during or after has rarely been tested directly, which is the gap this pilot study set out to probe.

What the study did. In a randomized, placebo-controlled crossover design, 11 physically active men (average age about 26) each completed five conditions on separate occasions: creatine before exercise, during exercise, after exercise, a placebo, and a no-supplement control. The dose was 0.1 grams per kilogram of body weight of creatine monohydrate. In each session they performed bench press and back squat for six sets at 80% of their one-rep maximum, and researchers measured the total load lifted along with jump performance, mood, cognition, perceived exertion, muscle soreness, and blood markers.

What they found on strength. Taking creatine before the session produced significantly greater performance than placebo and the control condition for both the bench press (p = 0.035) and, more strongly, the back squat (p < 0.001). In practical terms, the pre-workout timing let participants move more total weight during that session than the other approaches.

What did not differ. Many other measures showed no meaningful difference across the timing conditions, including countermovement jump performance, cognitive test scores, mood, perceived exertion, perceived recovery, and delayed-onset muscle soreness. So the timing signal was specific to the heavy strength lifts rather than a broad, across-the-board effect.

A note on the blood markers. The researchers also saw condition-related differences in creatine kinase (a marker of muscle stress) and creatinine. Creatine kinase was higher when creatine was taken after exercise, and creatinine was lower when it was taken before, compared with several other conditions. These are exploratory biochemical signals rather than proven health effects.

How to read this, with heavy caveats. This was a pilot study with just 11 participants, all young, physically active men, and the authors are explicit that the findings are exploratory and need confirmation in larger, more rigorously controlled trials. A single-session performance boost also does not necessarily translate into bigger long-term gains, which depend far more on consistent training and total creatine intake over time.

Practical takeaway. The well-established basics have not changed: for strength goals, taking creatine consistently is what matters most. This early evidence adds a modest, plausible wrinkle, that dosing shortly before a heavy session might give a small edge, but it is not strong enough to overhaul anyone's routine. Those who supplement can reasonably take it around their workout without worrying that a specific minute makes or breaks results.

Bottom line. In a small pilot trial, taking creatine before lifting produced greater acute strength performance than taking it during or after, but with only 11 participants the result is preliminary, and consistent daily use remains the evidence-backed foundation for creatine's benefits.
