Grounding and Forest Bathing — Does Either Actually Work?

Two nature practices, one shared promise: reconnect with the earth and your body will thank you. Put them under the evidence microscope, though, and they part ways fast — one runs on measurable physiology, the other mostly on good vibes and a persuasive sales pitch.

Walk barefoot on dewy grass and you feel something — nobody disputes that. The question is what. The grounding movement says your skin is drinking free electrons from the planet; the Japanese forest-medicine tradition says your nervous system is downshifting among the trees. Both camps point at studies. Only one of them points at good ones.

What grounding claims to be

Grounding (or “earthing”) is the idea that direct skin contact with the earth’s surface — bare feet on grass, or conductive mats and bedsheets wired to the ground port of a wall outlet — lets the body absorb electrons that neutralize free radicals, damp inflammation, deepen sleep and calm the stress response. The theory was popularized in the 2000s and is laid out in review papers by the movement’s own founders.1

It is worth pausing on that word “own”: the key reviews and several of the central studies share authors who built and marketed the earthing industry — books, mats, sheets and all.13 That does not automatically make the findings wrong. It does mean the field has been grading its own homework.

Grounding: what the studies actually show

The evidence base is thin in exactly the ways that matter. The frequently cited sleep-and-cortisol study had 12 participants, no control group, and self-reported outcomes — a pilot, by its own admission.2 The inflammation claims rest on case reports and small trials collected in reviews written by the theory’s architects.3 Independent, well-controlled replications — the boring machinery that turned forest bathing into real science — are largely missing.

One finding deserves honest mention because it is genuinely intriguing: a Penn State neonatal study found that electrically grounding preterm infants in incubators measurably improved vagal tone, a marker of parasympathetic nervous activity.4 It was small, it concerned a very special electrical environment (an isolette humming with equipment), and it needs replication before anyone builds a health claim on it — but it is the kind of controlled, objective signal the rest of the field lacks.

And here is the confounder that quietly carries the whole practice: to ground yourself the traditional way, you go outside, often to a park or a garden, usually unhurried, usually in daylight. Outdoor light, gentle movement, a pause from screens — every one of those has documented benefits. The barefoot part may simply be along for the ride.

Forest bathing: the one with actual data

Shinrin-yoku — “taking in the forest atmosphere” — began as a Japanese public-health program in the 1980s and, unlike grounding, grew up inside academic medicine. The landmark field experiments sent the same young adults to both forest and city environments across 24 forests in Japan and compared their physiology head-to-head. In the forest: lower salivary cortisol, lower blood pressure and pulse, stronger parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) nerve activity and lower sympathetic activity than the identical protocol in the city.5

Those single-visit findings have since been pooled: a systematic review and meta-analysis found forest environments significantly lower blood pressure than non-forest settings,7 and another meta-analysis confirmed reduced salivary cortisol — your question about stress hormones, answered in the direction you’d hope.8 The immune angle is stranger and more interesting: a multi-day forest trip increased natural killer cell activity and anti-cancer protein expression in blood samples — and a comparable city sightseeing trip did not. The proposed mechanism is phytoncides, the airborne compounds trees emit, though relaxation itself likely contributes.6

How much nature does it take? A study of nearly 20,000 English adults found the sweet spot begins around 120 minutes a week — below that, no measurable wellbeing benefit; above it, a clear one, whether taken as one long forest Saturday or several short walks.9

Fair caveats: you cannot blind someone to the fact that they are standing in a forest, so expectation effects are baked into every study, and many trials are small. But within-person designs, objective biomarkers and consistent direction across dozens of studies make this one of the better-supported low-cost health practices we have.

Your brain on trees: the beta-to-alpha question

Does the brain actually shift from busy beta-band activity toward the relaxed-but-alert alpha state in nature? The EEG evidence points that way — for example, a controlled trial that walked young adults through a bamboo forest and a city street found brainwave changes consistent with relaxation in the forest condition, alongside better mood scores.10 But EEG measured outdoors on moving people is noisy, the studies are small, and analysis choices vary — so treat the tidy “beta switches to alpha” story as plausible and supported in direction, not yet nailed down. The findings that are nailed down — cortisol, blood pressure, heart-rate variability — all describe the same downshift from a different angle.578

The verdicts

Forest bathing: works, measurably. Lower cortisol, lower blood pressure, a nervous system shifted toward rest-and-digest, and an immune signal that outlasts the visit — from controlled comparisons and meta-analyses. It is free, pleasant and doseable: aim for two hours a week among trees, in one piece or many.

Grounding: not proven. The published evidence is small, largely uncontrolled and unusually entangled with the people selling the mats. Walking barefoot on grass is lovely and costs nothing — notice that it usually happens outdoors, in daylight, in green space, which is exactly the part with evidence behind it. The $200 grounded bedsheet is buying a certainty the science hasn’t earned.

Bottom line: spend your effort on the forest, not the electrons. Two hours a week in green space delivers measurable physiology — cortisol down, blood pressure down, parasympathetic tone up, with a plausible (if soft) EEG shift toward relaxed alpha states. Grounding’s claims rest on pilot studies and vendor-authored reviews; go barefoot because it feels good, not because of the electrons.
