After our look at creatine gummies — where independent labs kept finding candy with no active ingredient in it — a fair follow-up question is whether the gummy format is broken across the board. It isn’t. Some supplements do their job perfectly well as a gummy; one even outperformed its tablet twin in a head-to-head trial. The trick is knowing which is which before you pay candy prices for your nutrients.
The rule of thumb: milligrams fit, grams don’t
A gummy is mostly glucose syrup, gelatin or pectin, and water — roughly two to three grams of candy. Whatever active ingredient you want has to hide inside that, survive being cooked into an acidic syrup, and stay intact for months in a soft, moist matrix. That gives you two filters:
- Dose: nutrients needed in micrograms or low milligrams (vitamin D, B12, biotin, folate) disappear into a gummy without trouble. Anything dosed in grams (creatine, collagen, fiber, protein) physically cannot fit — whatever the label implies.
- Stability: the molecule has to tolerate heat, acid and moisture. Vitamin D and B12 cope well. Creatine famously does not, and vitamin C slowly fades, which is why honest manufacturers add overages.
Pass both filters and a gummy is a legitimate delivery vehicle. Fail either one and you are buying sweets with a supplement label.
Gummies that genuinely work
Vitamin D — the gummy success story
A randomized cross-over study in healthy adults compared a single 20,000 IU dose of vitamin D3 as gummies versus tablets, and the gummies won: total exposure (AUC) was roughly double, and peak blood levels were twice as high.1 The researchers’ explanation is mundane — a chewed gummy starts dissolving in the mouth while a swallowed tablet still has to disintegrate downstream. The dose is micrograms, the molecule is robust, and absorption is at least as good: this is the format working exactly as advertised.
B12, biotin, folate — and vitamin C with a caveat
The same logic covers the B-vitamins commonly sold as gummies: doses are tiny, the molecules hold up reasonably, and deficiency correction does not depend on split-second precision. Vitamin C also fits dose-wise (a few hundred milligrams is realistic across a serving), with the caveat that it degrades slowly in the moist matrix — a reason to buy fresh stock from brands that publish testing rather than the dusty jar at the back of the discount shelf.
Borderline cases: check the arithmetic
Multivitamins pass the dose filter but have the worst track record in practice. ConsumerLab, which has tested multivitamins for years, found four of five gummy multivitamins failing quality testing in a 2017 round, and in its 2023 review all four gummies tested had potency inaccuracies — making gummies the format most likely to fail, year after year.3 Degradation forces manufacturers into large overages, so the amounts drift high at production and sink over shelf life. Gummy multis also usually skip iron entirely — partly formulation, partly child-safety. A gummy multi from a brand with published third-party testing is defensible; a random one is a lottery.
Magnesium is a bulk problem in miniature: a meaningful dose is 200–400 mg of elemental magnesium, but magnesium salts are heavy, so most gummies carry only 50–100 mg each. The label maths often means three or four gummies per day — doable, but you are back to eating candy in multiples.
Omega-3 rarely survives the arithmetic: gummies typically contain a small fraction of the EPA+DHA you would get from one ordinary fish-oil capsule, and fitting oil into a water-based candy is its own formulation fight. If omega-3 matters to you, capsules or algae oil remain the serious options.
Where gummies can’t deliver: the gram club
Creatine (3–5 g), collagen (2.5–15 g), fiber supplements (3–10 g), protein (20+ g). No gummy chemistry fixes this — the dose simply outweighs the candy. Labels bridge the gap with serving tricks (“take 6 gummies”) or by quietly containing far less than implied; for creatine, lab tests showed exactly how far that goes, with several brands delivering under 1% of the labeled dose.4 For anything dosed in grams, powder is not just cheaper — it is the only format where the dose is real.
The melatonin warning: right dose class, wrong precision
Melatonin is dosed in milligrams, so it fits a gummy easily — and melatonin gummies are hugely popular, including for children. Yet when researchers analyzed 25 melatonin gummy products for a 2023 JAMA research letter, 22 of the 25 were inaccurately labeled: measured content ranged from 74% to 347% of the stated dose, and one product contained no melatonin at all (it contained CBD instead).2 A sleep hormone at three times the labeled dose is not a rounding error, least of all in a product children mistake for sweets. If you use melatonin gummies, brand selection and published testing are not optional extras — they are the whole game.
Sugar, teeth and the candy problem
Even a well-made gummy is still candy: typically a couple of grams of added sugar per serving, acidified with citric acid, sticky by design. Taken daily, that is a small standing sugar habit and a dentist’s least favorite texture — sugared acid that clings to teeth. “Sugar-free” versions swap in sweeteners with their own trade-offs, which we cover in Sugars & sweeteners. And the fact that supplements taste like sweets cuts both ways: it helps adherence, and it is precisely why accidental overconsumption by children is a real concern with flavored supplements. Store them like medicine, not like snacks.
A 30-second buying checklist
- Check the dose class. Micrograms or low milligrams per day — a gummy can do the job. Grams — walk away, buy powder.
- Multiply it out. Amount per gummy × gummies per serving × servings per jar. Surprisingly often, the “month’s supply” lasts ten days at the label dose.
- Look for published third-party testing with a recent date and the actual measured values — especially for multivitamins and melatonin, where the failure data is documented.23
- Count the sugar against the rest of your day, and keep the jar away from children.
