Collagen peptides — skin, joints & the honest evidence

The body’s main structural protein, sold as hydrolysed “peptides” for skin and joints. The evidence is genuinely moderate and improving — with a few caveats worth knowing.

Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body — the scaffold of skin, tendon, cartilage and bone. As a supplement it comes as hydrolysed collagen (collagen peptides): broken into small, well-absorbed fragments. It’s one of the few “beauty” supplements with real trial evidence, though it is still, fundamentally, a protein.

What it is

Collagen supplements are made by breaking animal collagen (bovine, porcine, fish/“marine”, or chicken) into short peptides that survive digestion and are absorbed. They are especially rich in glycine, proline and hydroxyproline. The idea is two-fold: supply these building blocks, and possibly signal the body’s own cells to make more collagen.

Skin evidence

Hydration & elasticityA systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised trials found collagen peptides significantly increased skin hydration and elasticity, with benefits emerging after ≥8 weeks.1
WrinklesSeveral trials also report modest reductions in wrinkle depth at 2.5–10 g/day.1
The caveatMany trials are industry-funded, formulations differ, and a 2025 analysis was more sceptical, finding the skin-ageing evidence less convincing — so treat the effect as real but modest.3

Joint evidence

For joints, hydrolysed collagen peptides distribute to cartilage tissue and appear to have mild analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects.

Osteoarthritis / knee painRandomised, placebo-controlled trials using 5–15 g/day report reduced activity-related and osteoarthritis knee pain and improved function over 8–12+ weeks.2
Type II collagenA separate, small-dose approach uses undenatured type II collagen (UC-II, ~40 mg), which works by a different (immune-tolerance) mechanism than the gram-dose peptides.

Types & what to look for

Type I & IIIThe hydrolysed peptides used for skin and general joint support (from bovine or marine sources). “Marine” (fish) collagen is mostly type I.
Type II (UC-II)A low-dose, undenatured form specifically for joints — not interchangeable with peptides.
Pair with vitamin CCollagen synthesis requires vitamin C — make sure your intake is adequate.
QualityChoose hydrolysed peptides, ideally third-party tested; source (bovine/marine/porcine) matters for dietary preference, not much for effect.

SafetyVery well tolerated; mild digestive upset is the main report. It is an animal product (not vegan); marine collagen suits those avoiding beef/pork but not fish allergy.
Who benefitsPeople targeting skin ageing or joint comfort / osteoarthritis, and anyone wanting a glycine-rich protein top-up. Less relevant if your protein intake is already high and skin/joints are fine.
PerspectiveCollagen is not a “complete” protein for muscle building — it’s low in some essential amino acids. Use it for skin/joints, not as your main protein.
Bottom line: one of the better-evidenced “beauty” supplements — real, modest benefits for skin hydration/elasticity and joint pain at the right dose, given time and enough vitamin C, but not a miracle and not your main protein.
