What it is

Rosehips are the bright red fruit left after the rose flower fades. Standardised rosehip powder supplies a specific galactolipid known as GOPO, along with vitamin C and polyphenols. GOPO appears to reduce inflammatory signalling and the migration of immune cells into joints, which is the proposed basis for its effect.

The evidence

A meta-analysis pooling three randomised, placebo-controlled trials (Christensen et al., 2008) concluded that standardised rosehip powder significantly reduced pain in osteoarthritis, with patients roughly twice as likely to respond as on placebo.1 Individual trials also reported reduced stiffness and less reliance on rescue painkillers.2 The effect size is modest, and the trials mostly used one branded powder — but the direction is consistent.

Dose & how to use

Trials used about 5 g/day of standardised rosehip powder (supplying GOPO), often split into two doses with food. As with the other joint options, give it a few weeks to couple of months and judge honestly.

Safety & who benefits

Very well tolerated — it is a food, so the main issue is occasional mild digestive upset. The vitamin-C content is modest and not a concern at these doses. A sensible low-risk add-on for people with osteoarthritis who prefer a food-based option, and it pairs comfortably with the classics.
