Time-restricted eating studies rarely agree on much, but a new analysis narrows down what actually matters. Researchers pooled 41 randomized controlled trials covering 2287 participants, all testing time-restricted eating (TRE) — where all daily food is eaten within a set window — against usual eating patterns for at least a month. Instead of treating TRE as one thing, they split it two ways: by when the eating window fell (early, meaning the last meal was eaten before 5 p.m.; mid, between 5 and 7 p.m.; late, after 7 p.m.; or self-selected) and by how long the window lasted (under 8 hours, exactly 8 hours, or over 8 hours).
Overall, TRE beat usual eating on body weight, BMI, fat mass, waist circumference, systolic blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, fasting insulin, and triglycerides.
But timing, not window length, was what separated the better results from the rest. Compared with late TRE, early TRE reduced body weight by 1.15 kg and fasting insulin by 3.32 μIU/mL — and the researchers rated the certainty of evidence for both findings as high, which is unusually strong for nutrition research. Early TRE also ranked consistently better across other weight and blood sugar measures. Window length — under 8 hours versus exactly 8 versus over 8 — showed no consistent pattern by comparison.
In plain terms: an early dinner may matter more than a narrow eating window. Someone who stops eating by 5 p.m. every day appears to do better, metabolically, than someone eating on the same overall pattern but finishing after 7 p.m. — regardless of how many hours their eating window spans.
A caveat on what this study can and can't say. This is a network meta-analysis: it compares results across 41 separate trials rather than testing early against late eating head-to-head within a single study. Most of the underlying trials (90%) were rated low risk of bias, and about 60% of the comparisons reached moderate-to-high certainty — solid by the standards of diet research, but not the same as one large trial randomizing people directly to early versus late eating. The review was funded by Taiwanese public research bodies, with no industry funding or conflicts of interest declared.
Bottom line. Across 41 trials, time-restricted eating that ended by late afternoon or early evening outperformed the same eating pattern finishing after 7 p.m. — cutting body weight by just over a kilogram more and fasting insulin more substantially — while the width of the eating window itself made no consistent difference. If you're going to try time-restricted eating, this suggests an earlier cutoff matters more than a stricter one.
