Recreational football improved weight and blood pressure markers, review finds

A casual game of football may be an enjoyable way to improve several markers tied to obesity. A systematic review and meta-analysis in the Journal of Sports Science and Medicine asked whether recreational football, the informal, small-sided kind rather than competitive sport, can improve body composition and heart-related markers in people carrying excess weight.

Why this angle matters. Structured exercise works, but sticking with it is the hard part; many people find gym routines dull and drop out. Team games like recreational football fold high-intensity bursts, endurance, and social enjoyment into one activity, which is why researchers are interested in whether it delivers real health benefits, not just fun.

What the study did. The team searched five databases through December 2025 for randomized controlled trials comparing recreational football with non-football control conditions. They pooled the results using standard meta-analysis methods, checked for publication bias, and rated the certainty of the evidence with the GRADE framework. In total, 16 trials with 387 participants were included.

What improved. Compared with controls, recreational football significantly improved a cluster of obesity-related measures: body mass index, body fat percentage, waist circumference, triglycerides, and both systolic and diastolic blood pressure. That combination, less central fat plus lower blood pressure and triglycerides, targets several of the risk factors that cluster together in metabolic health.

What did not clearly change. The picture was not uniformly positive. Effects on lean body mass were inconsistent across trials, and there were no significant between-group differences for total cholesterol, LDL ("bad") cholesterol, or HDL ("good") cholesterol. So football moved some markers but not the full cholesterol panel.

An important caveat about WHO was studied. The authors are careful to note that the available evidence came predominantly from children and adolescents and from male participants. That limits how confidently the findings can be applied to adults in general, and to women in particular, until more diverse trials are done.

How strong is the evidence. The overall certainty of evidence was rated moderate to low, and the total number of participants (387) was relatively small. The authors explicitly call for large, well-designed trials with standardized protocols and longer follow-up before drawing firm conclusions.

How to read this. This is a synthesis of small trials rather than one large definitive study, and the skew toward young and male participants matters. The results are best seen as promising and directionally encouraging rather than settled, especially for older adults and women.
