Apigenin for sleep

A popular pure supplement with plausible biology — and a direct human-evidence gap that product labels rarely make clear.

The short version

What apigenin is

Apigenin is a flavone found in parsley, celery, chamomile and several other plants. A capsule labelled apigenin is a concentrated isolated compound, not simply dried chamomile in another package.

That distinction matters. Chamomile contains many potentially active compounds, and its apigenin content varies with the plant, extraction method and product. A result from chamomile tea or extract cannot tell us what 25 or 50 mg of purified apigenin will do.

Why it is linked with sleep

Apigenin is often described as acting on GABA-A receptors, part of the brain's inhibitory signalling system. That is a plausible mechanism, but receptor and animal findings do not establish a treatment effect in people. A 2024 review reached the same practical conclusion: the biology is interesting while direct clinical evidence remains sparse.1

What the human studies tested

A 2011 placebo-controlled pilot trial in 34 adults with chronic primary insomnia tested a standardised chamomile extract. It found no statistically significant improvement in the main sleep-diary outcomes, although some daytime measures moved in a favourable direction.2

A 2017 randomised trial in 60 older adults reported better questionnaire-rated sleep quality after chamomile extract.3 That is a useful signal, but it cannot be assigned to apigenin alone: the preparation contained the rest of chamomile's chemistry too.

The honest verdict: chamomile has limited and mixed human evidence; isolated apigenin has a direct human sleep-evidence gap.

Dose: what the label does not tell you

Pure apigenin products commonly provide doses in the tens of milligrams, but a common retail dose is not a clinically validated dose. No reliable human trial has shown that a particular amount improves sleep, that a larger dose works better, or when it should be taken.

Food Health Lab therefore does not present a “therapeutic” dose. If you still choose to try it, favour a single-ingredient product with transparent third-party testing, avoid adding several new sleep supplements at once, and stop if it causes unwanted effects or no meaningful benefit.

Safety and interactions

Short-term safety data for isolated apigenin supplements are limited. Laboratory work suggests concentrated apigenin can affect drug-metabolising enzymes and transport proteins, but the size and clinical importance of those effects in people remain uncertain.4

Use extra caution with sedating medicines, anticoagulant or antiplatelet treatment, and medicines with a narrow therapeutic range. Avoid concentrated apigenin during pregnancy or breastfeeding because adequate safety data are lacking. Chamomile-derived products may also be unsuitable for people allergic to plants in the daisy family.

Bottom line

Apigenin is biologically credible and worth studying, but it is not yet an evidence-based insomnia treatment. The strongest defensible description is a plausible experimental supplement whose direct human sleep evidence has not caught up with its popularity.
