Millet extract (miliacin)

A traditional hair remedy with one modern trial to its name — small, industry-run, and easy to over-sell.

Millet seed extract (from Panicum miliaceum) turns up in a lot of European “hair, skin and nails” formulas, and it has two things going for it on paper: it is naturally rich in silicic acid, and it carries a triterpene called miliacin that is proposed to nudge the follicle’s growth phase. What it does not have is a deep evidence base — essentially one decent trial, which the marketing tends to inflate.

What it is

Millet is an ancient cereal grain, and its seed extract has a folk reputation for hair and skin. Two components are cited: silicic acid (linking it loosely to the silica story) and miliacin, a triterpene that laboratory work suggests can stimulate proliferation in the hair bulb. The delivery matters — miliacin is fat-soluble and poorly absorbed on its own, so the studied product encapsulates it in polar lipids (“MePL”) to get it in.

The one trial worth citing

Keophiphath and colleagues (2020) ran a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of miliacin-in-polar-lipids in 65 non-menopausal women with telogen effluvium over 12 weeks. The supplement group showed a reduction in the proportion of telogen hairs and improvements in scalp dryness and hair brightness.1 It is a real, peer-reviewed RCT — but it is small, short, single-product, and funded by the ingredient’s maker. One study like this earns cautious interest, not confidence.

Why it is hard to judge

In practice you almost never buy millet alone. It rides along in multi-ingredient hair capsules next to L-cystine, biotin and pantothenic acid, all of which have their own (also modest) stories. When a combination helps a little, there is no way to know millet did any of the lifting. That is a recurring theme across this whole category, and millet is one of its clearest examples.

Where it sits

Treat millet as a plausible minor ingredient with one supporting trial — fine if it comes bundled in a formula you are already trying, not worth seeking out on its own or paying a premium for.

Bottom line: millet/miliacin has a single small manufacturer RCT behind it. A reasonable passenger in a combination formula; not a reason to buy on its own.
