The burn of chilli comes from capsaicin, which activates heat/pain receptors. Beyond flavour, it has a small metabolic effect and a well-established use in topical pain relief.

What it is

Capsaicin is the pungent compound in chilli peppers (Capsicum), acting on the TRPV1 “heat” receptor. Cayenne is simply dried, ground hot chilli.

The evidence

Dietary capsaicin produces a modest rise in energy expenditure and fat oxidation and can slightly reduce appetite — helpful at the margins, not a fat-burner. Topical capsaicin has good evidence for neuropathic and osteoarthritis pain.1

How to use

Enjoy chilli to taste in food. For pain, capsaicin is used as a cream/patch (not oral), under guidance.

Safety

Safe as food for most; can aggravate reflux, ulcers or IBS, and irritate skin and eyes. Wash hands after handling.
