What it is
L-arginine is a conditionally essential amino acid and the substrate for the enzyme that makes nitric oxide. Its problem is first-pass metabolism: intestinal and liver enzymes clear much of an oral dose before it works.

Because of that absorption bottleneck, oral arginine raises circulating arginine less than citrulline does, and its performance evidence is inconsistent. Reviews of the citrulline pathway highlight this contrast.1 Arginine retains defined roles in clinical/IV settings.

Studies have used 3–6 g, but higher doses often cause stomach upset for limited benefit. For nitric-oxide goals, citrulline is preferred.
