Function

Vitamin E is a family of fat-soluble antioxidants (mainly alpha-tocopherol):

  • Membrane antioxidant: the main defender of cell membranes and blood fats against oxidative damage.
  • Protects other nutrients: shields polyunsaturated fats and works with vitamin C, which recycles it.
  • Immune support: contributes to normal immune function, particularly in older adults.
  • Cell signalling: roles in gene expression and platelet regulation beyond pure antioxidant action.

Different forms — and which to choose

Natural (RRR / "d-")d-alpha-tocopherol — roughly twice as potent as synthetic; the preferred form.
Synthetic (all-rac / "dl-")dl-alpha-tocopherol — cheaper, less active.
Mixed tocopherols / tocotrienolsBroader natural spectrum found in food; marketed as more "complete".

Bottom line: vitamin E from nuts, seeds and vegetable oils is beneficial and safe; isolated high-dose supplements are not recommended and can raise bleeding and cancer risk. Skip the megadoses.
