Carnitine is made in the body from the amino acids lysine and methionine, and its job is to shuttle fatty acids into mitochondria to be burned for energy. That role is why it’s sold for fat loss — but the evidence is more nuanced than the marketing, and points more clearly to recovery.

What it is

L-carnitine is a compound the body makes from lysine and methionine (and gets from meat/dairy). Its central role is fatty-acid oxidation — carrying long-chain fats across the mitochondrial membrane so they can be used for energy. Most healthy, meat-eating people already have plenty.

Fat loss

This is where marketing outruns the science. A large review found L-carnitine produced small but significant reductions in body weight, BMI and fat mass — but the effect is modest, most evident with concurrent diet and exercise, and it does not reliably melt fat on its own.1 Treat it as a mild adjunct, not a fat-burner.

Exercise recovery

The better-supported benefit. Randomised trials using L-carnitine L-tartrate (~2 g/day) for at least 5 weeks report less muscle damage, soreness and fatigue after hard exercise, across ages and sexes.2 It works slowly — this is a load-it-for-weeks supplement, not an acute one.

Brain & nerves (ALCAR)

Acetyl-L-carnitine has been studied for cognition in older adults and for peripheral neuropathy, with some positive but not definitive results. It’s a reasonable, research-backed option in those specific contexts — less so as a general “nootropic” for healthy young adults.

Recovery: ~2 g/day L-carnitine L-tartrateGeneral: 1–3 g/day

Trials use 1–3 g/day, often with a carbohydrate/protein meal to aid uptake. Take it consistently for weeks; single doses do little.

Safety & TMAO

TMAOGut bacteria convert carnitine to trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO), which is associated with atherosclerosis. Avoid doses above ~3 g/day unless a clinician is monitoring you.3
TolerabilityUsually well tolerated; higher doses can cause nausea, cramps or a fishy body odour.
Who benefitsEndurance/strength athletes seeking better recovery; older adults or specific clinical cases (ALCAR); vegetarians/vegans (lower dietary intake). Less compelling as a stand-alone fat-loss aid.
Bottom line: a mild recovery aid and, at best, a modest fat-loss adjunct alongside diet and training — keep the dose sensible (≤2–3 g/day) to avoid raising TMAO.
