Both grape seed extract and Pycnogenol (French maritime pine bark) are rich in oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs) — flavonoid antioxidants marketed for circulation, blood pressure and skin.

What it is

OPCs (proanthocyanidins) are the tannin-like flavonoids concentrated in grape seeds and pine bark. They support nitric-oxide-mediated blood-vessel function and are strong antioxidants.

The evidence

Grape seed extract improved endothelial function and reduced blood pressure in people with pre-/mild hypertension, with the clearest effect at higher doses.1 For Pycnogenol, a meta-analysis found no significant blood-pressure benefit, though it has other circulation and skin research.2

Skin health (Pycnogenol)

Pycnogenol has a distinct — and fairly persuasive — body of research for skin, one of its strongest areas.

Elasticity & hydrationA 12-week study in women (55–68) found Pycnogenol improved skin elasticity and hydration, alongside a ~40% rise in collagen type I and ~44% rise in hyaluronic-acid synthase gene expression in skin biopsies.3
Pigmentation / melasmaIn women with melasma, oral Pycnogenol reduced pigmentation over 12 weeks.4
Photoaging & UVIt also shows photoprotective effects and, by curbing collagen- and elastin-degrading enzymes, may limit photoageing.3
Dose (skin)Skin trials typically use ~75–100 mg/day for 8–12 weeks.

Grape seed extract 150–400 mg/day of standardised OPCs; Pycnogenol commonly 50–150 mg/day.

Safety & who benefits

Generally well tolerated. Of interest for blood pressure and circulation (grape seed first) and venous/skin support.

Bottom line: grape seed OPCs have a real (dose-dependent) blood-pressure signal; Pycnogenol is pricier with weaker BP evidence — both are safe adjuncts, not treatments.
