What it is
Magnesium malate is magnesium bound to malic acid — the tart acid in apples and an intermediate in the Krebs cycle, the sequence of reactions your mitochondria use to release energy from food. That biochemical address is the origin of malate’s “energy” reputation, and it is worth stating plainly: your body makes all the malic acid it needs, and swallowing extra has never been shown to raise energy output. The honest case for malate rests on the magnesium, not the malic acid. The salt is about 15% elemental magnesium, so 1000 mg of magnesium malate provides roughly 150 mg of the mineral.
Absorption & bioavailability
Malate dissolves well, and the comparative data — though thinner than for citrate — are flattering. In an animal study comparing five magnesium compounds (sulfate, oxide, acetyl taurate, citrate, malate), malate produced the highest overall blood magnesium and stayed elevated in serum the longest.1 Human head-to-head trials of malate specifically are lacking, so treat that as a strong hint rather than a settled fact. In everyday use its most valued property is tolerability: non-laxative for most people, with no sedative quality — where glycinate suits the evening, malate suits the morning.
Magnesium & training
Malate has become the training crowd’s magnesium, and the underlying logic is sound. Magnesium sits at the centre of muscle contraction and relaxation, energy (ATP) metabolism and electrolyte balance — and it is lost through sweat, so hard-training people run higher requirements at the same time as many of them under-eat magnesium-rich foods. A review of magnesium and exercise concluded that supplementation can improve performance measures mainly when magnesium status is low to begin with; in well-nourished athletes, extra magnesium has not reliably boosted performance.2
The fair summary for someone who trains: magnesium is worth getting right — through food first, supplements if intake falls short — and malate is a comfortable, well-absorbed way to do it. It is insurance for a real and common shortfall, not an ergogenic aid.
The fatigue story
Malate is often marketed for fatigue and muscle pain, sometimes with fibromyalgia named outright. The evidence behind that is one small crossover pilot from 1995 using “Super Malic” (malic acid plus magnesium): in the blinded low-dose phase it did not beat placebo; improvements appeared only in a later open-label phase at higher doses — the weakest kind of signal.3 Nothing solid has replicated it since. If you are exhausted, the more useful magnesium fact is the ordinary one: fatigue is an early symptom of magnesium deficiency, and correcting a genuine shortfall helps. Chasing the malate molecule itself for energy is not supported.

The usual range is 200–400 mg elemental magnesium per day, with food. Doses refer to elemental magnesium — check the label, since “1000 mg magnesium malate” means about 150 mg of the mineral. Its non-drowsy character makes it the natural morning or pre-training choice; if you take other magnesium in the evening, count both toward the supplemental upper limit in the main guide.
Side effects & safety
Very well tolerated; loose stools are possible but uncommon at normal doses.
