Magnesium taurate

Magnesium taurate occupies an odd spot in the line-up: the reasoning behind it is better than average, the direct evidence for it is thinner than average. It pairs magnesium with taurine, an amino acid the heart is rich in — and both halves of that pair have real human data on blood pressure. What is missing is trials of the combined salt itself. What it is

Magnesium taurate is magnesium bound to taurine, a sulfur-containing amino acid your body makes and concentrates in electrically active tissue — heart muscle, retina, brain. Taurine helps regulate calcium handling in heart cells and the tone of blood-vessel walls, which is why this pairing was proposed for cardiovascular support in the first place; the idea was formally argued in a 1996 hypothesis paper that still gets cited on product pages today.1 The salt is only about 9% elemental magnesium, so typical capsules deliver less mineral than citrate or malate at the same size — check the elemental figure on the label.

The heart evidence — honestly sorted

Both halves of the pair have credible human data:

  • Magnesium: a meta-analysis of 34 randomised trials found supplementation lowered blood pressure by about 2/1.8 mmHg on average — modest but real.2
  • Taurine: a meta-analysis of human trials found oral taurine reduced resting blood pressure, on the order of 3/1.5 mmHg.3

What does not exist: randomised human trials of magnesium taurate itself. The combination is plausible and the ingredients are individually supported, but the specific claim that this salt outperforms ordinary magnesium for the heart is an extrapolation, not a finding. And the effect sizes above are lifestyle-supplement territory — useful at the margin, no substitute for treatment. If your blood pressure is actually high, that conversation belongs with a doctor.

Absorption & bioavailability

Direct human absorption data for taurate are sparse, but the signal is positive. In an animal study comparing five magnesium compounds, the closely related acetyl-taurate form was rapidly absorbed, produced the second-highest overall blood magnesium, and reached the highest brain magnesium concentrations of the forms tested — accompanied by reduced anxiety-like behaviour in the animals.4 That has made taurate a quiet favourite in the calm/mood niche as well as the heart niche. As with malate, treat animal pharmacokinetics as a hint, not proof. Tolerability in practice is good — taurate sits with glycinate among the gentler, less laxative forms.

Dose & timing

Typical products: 1500–2000 mg salt ≈ 125–180 mg elemental

Common products supply 1500–2000 mg of magnesium taurate per day, which is only about 125–180 mg of elemental magnesium — a modest amount that fits comfortably under the supplemental upper limit discussed in the main guide. Take it with food, at any time of day; some prefer evenings for the calming association. If you want a full 300–400 mg elemental top-up, taurate alone gets bulky — many people combine a smaller taurate dose with food sources or another form.

Side effects & safety

Gentle on the gut; loose stools are uncommon. Taurine at these amounts is well within the range consumed safely in studies. The magnesium cautions stand: avoid unsupervised use in significant kidney disease, separate magnesium from certain antibiotics, bisphosphonates and thyroid medication by 2–4 hours — and note that magnesium can add to the effect of blood-pressure medication, which is exactly the population drawn to this form. Bottom line: a reasonable, gentle form with better-than-average logic and thinner-than-average direct proof. The benefits that are proven belong to magnesium and taurine separately — and measured high blood pressure belongs with a doctor, not a supplement aisle.
