Lycopene is the pigment that makes tomatoes and watermelon red. It’s a strong antioxidant with intriguing population-level associations — though, as so often with antioxidants, the trial evidence is softer than the epidemiology.

What it is

Lycopene is a fat-soluble carotenoid without vitamin-A activity, concentrated in red tomatoes. Cooking and a little oil break down the cell matrix and dramatically improve absorption.

The evidence

Meta-analyses of observational studies link higher lycopene (diet and blood levels) to lower prostate-cancer risk, though not clearly for advanced disease, and to cardiovascular benefits.1 Randomised supplement trials are fewer and less conclusive — the tomato food signal is stronger than the isolated pill.

15–30 mg/day from supplements, or simply eat cooked tomato with oil regularly — often the better-value route.

Safe. Of interest for prostate and heart health; food-first (tomato sauce, paste) is a sensible strategy.
